Making a difference to the inclusion of BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) communities in Sport and physical activities across Wales

BME Sport Cymru is a 2-year Sport Wales funded strategic partnership project between WCVA and a network of delivery and supporting partners.

The aim of the project is to take a sustainable approach to increasing BME participation in sport across Wales, so as to improve the long-term opportunities and health outcomes of those communities.

  • North Wales Regional Equality Council (NWREN) - North Wales

A network of supporting partners from the BME and sport sectors also offer expertise and support.

BME Sport Wales 2

BME Sport Cymru offers a strategic approach towards increasing participation in sport and physical activities by BME communities and is delivering a programme of advice, information, signposting, support and other capacity building interventions.

These are aimed at up-skilling and increasing the confidence, competency and effectiveness of staff and volunteers, so that they can increase participation in sport and physical activities of BME communities.

The project has 3 main priorities:

1. Increased Participation

More individuals from BME communities will take part in sustainable sporting and physical activities resulting in improved health and wellbeing

2. Building Capacity

Individuals and groups from BME communities will be supported and capacity built in the areas of volunteering, training, governance and funding to improve sustainability

3. Tackling Inequality

Mainstream community-based sporting organisations and NGBs will develop stronger links with and understanding of BME communities improving equality of access to sustainable sporting activities

The story so far…

The BME Sport Cymru project has been successfully established and operational since June/July 2016

The project has had a very successful year, gained momentum and has exceeded targets in many of the activity areas:

  • The project, through the delivery officers, activity budgets and the partnerships has really opened up opportunities for the communities to increase physical activity, developing individuals and groups and also acting as a catalyst for change.
  • Local delivery officers work programmes have been devised, addressing the 3 priority areas, targets set, the geographical location and the local demographics.
  • An initial stage of the project has been spent identifying community needs and using community development principles as a guiding method for delivering this project.
  • The limited budget available meant every penny used was seen as an investment rather than an expense and strengthening of partnerships was core part of this work for sustaining the project. Read the full report
